Safer Roads for Pedestrians and Cyclists in Nigeria

The Safer Roads for Pedestrians and Cyclists in Nigeria is a project jointly developed by Transportation Growth Initiative, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Ministry of Health, The Transportation Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Africa Urban Cycling Organisation, GreenLight Initiative, Driving School Association of Nigeria and Ochenuell Mobility.

The Project is funded by the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration with UN Habitat as the Partner UN Organization who provides supervisory role in the project implementation. The project which is in response to the Global Action Plan for Road safety, 2021 – 2030  and inline with the Nigeria Road safety Strategy II, 2021 – 2030 and seeks overall, to contribute to the reduction of road fatalities in Nigeria by 50% before 2030. Create safe mobility system through pilot implementation of low speed measures in Nigerian cities with Abuja as pilot and generally create environment for the “RethinkMobility” slogan of the Global Plan of Action.

The project have various components which implementation are placed on all the participating organizations. Specifically, Ochenuel Mobility is responsible for;

1. development of the National Cycling Policy and Strategy, with an implementation plan for the city of Abuja
2. Hosting of 2 sessions of Open streets events and tactical urbanism as part of the citywide advocacy for just road space, speed reduction and general safe mobility for all irrespective of age, gender, status and ability.
3. Installation of Road signs, speed bumps and other speed counter measures towards realization of 30km default urban speed policy approved by the government of Nigeria. And to participate in other initiatives contained in the project.
