The Safe Streets to School Abuja Project

As part of Ochenuell Mobility Vision to entrench safe, just and sustainable mobility, the Safe Streets to School Abuja Project was developed. Ochenuell Mobility in collaboration with Global Designing Cities Initiative, USA have selected Tudun Wada Secondary School, wuse zone 4, Abuja as a pilot project and we are  implementing the project which is targeted at enhancing the quality of active travel by school children, and will undertake the following activities amongst other initiatives:

• Feasibility studies along adjoining streets leading to the selected school with a view to developing a model safe streets to school safety guide that the city can implement and escalate.
• Capacity building for key stakeholders including the city authority, security agencies, drivers unions, head of schools, parents and teachers on how to create conducive environment and buy bicycles for children to ride bicycle to school in Abuja
• Installation of bicycle parking facility at the school and donation of bicycles to some students at the chosen pilot school
• Media advocacy including hosting of an open streets event and the launch of the “Dad Buy Me a Bicycle Instead” campaign
• facilitation of minor street retrofit including installation of low speed road signs and erection of speed bumps and painting of zebra crossing along Constantine Street in front of Tudun Wada Secondary School.

This is in our modest effort to support the city in making Abuja a model city especially in its transportations system towards safer, inclusive, affordable, healthier and sustainable system for residents and the city.
